Virtual Patient System (VPS)

The Virtual Patient System is a collaborative effort between the School of Nursing and UAB School of Engineering, Enabling Technology Lab. This project will produce a Virtual Patient on a customized stereoscopic display system configured to mimic a patient bed. The Virtual patient system uses internally developed custom software, and data from the National Institutes of Health (NIH, NLM) Visible Human Project. The Virtual Patient will be an all inclusive, mobile display system for full-scale human anatomy that can be placed in existing lab spaces of the Learning Resources Center. The simulator will be controlled by the instructor through a graphical user interface (GUI).

The goal of this project is to develop a complete virtual patient system for an adult, adolescent, and child (male and female), for use in a variety of disciplines. Project goals will be accomplished by:

  • Collaborative efforts of faculty in their specific specialty or area of research
  • Integration of engineering simulation results into the graphical representation of the Visible Human datasets
  • Integration of Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and other volumetric data
  • Collaboration with other UAB entities.
  • Students projects
